Bush Tries to Kickstart U.S. Oil Shale Development
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Environment News Service -- WASHINGTON, DC, November 18, 2008 (ENS) - The Bush administration finalized regulations to govern the commercial development of oil shale on federal lands on Monday, rebuffing concerns that the rules are premature and ignoring the serious environmental concerns about tapping the resource.

Administration officials said investors keen to unlock the nation's vast oil shale resources need "rules of the road" even though the technology is still not commercially viable.

The rules, announced by the U.S. Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management, provide the regulatory framework for commercial oil shale development, including royalty rates and lease sizes.

Shale oil will not lower gas prices. The richest shale barely has a half barrel per ton. The oil isn't the same quality as petroleum either. This will be forgotten now that oil is below $50 a barrel. The economics aren't there.

Producing fuel from Oil Shale is but ONE OF MANY fuel alternatives that our nation needs to tap into.

Drilling offshore is another fuel source.

There are many other sources. Wind, solar, thermal, hydro are to name a few others.

We need them ALL !!!

Hey its domestic. Anything that is not foreign oil is a good sign. Better than not developing the shale at all. We all know that the oil prices will eventually go up. So this stance is a step in some direction of domestic oil sources.

Our energy security is not secure with 70% or our oil coming from overseas. And just a few days ago a big big big oil super tanker was hijacked carrying 2 million barrels of oil, and guess where that shipment was going to from Saudi Arabia,,, yep you guessed it,, the United States.

Oh I almost forgot. The Canadians produce a lot of oil digging shale, but their price for a liter of gas is much higher than ours. Do you know why? Because they sale their oil at world market prices. And then they tax the crap out of it before they sale it to the people of Canada. This is the same thing that will happen here. You people want off shore drilling, but what you don't understand is that it will not make prices cheaper. They will sale it at world market prices and all OPEC will have to do is cut production again to raise the price. And once we run out of our own oil, what do you think the price will be?

z1000 - You did not vote Bush out; he was not running. What you voted in is much worse than Bush. Obama has big ideas but lacks the experience and leadership skills to get the economy restarted. Investors on the left and right are taking their money out of the market saving it until Obama is replaced. Without a functioning Economy Obama can't implement any of his ideas.

Canada has been getting oil from shale for years. Have you not seen those hugh pits that they get it from on TV? I guess that the people that live in big cities dont have to worry about it, but the people who live in the areas affected will surely see it.

It says federal land. This is just another way of raping the national forrests like clear cutting trees. How do you think they are going to get to this shale? Mountain top removal thats how.

We need to explore every option we have so we are not depending on OPEC and it will give us more time to find alternative energy sources.

From the huge variance in responses, I'd say this subject needs more information to be passed around.

This would be a waste of resources on a technology that won't yield much energy, won't last for long and by the time it is functioning at full speed should have already been replaced. This technology would cause further damage to the environment both in its production and as its product is used for energy. We need to put all resources into getting clean, plentiful, cheap and renewable energy sources online as fast as possible, rather than trying to cling to the past.

With President Bush in lame duck status, I would be totally shocked to see if these regulations are voted on before the lame duck Congress adjourns for the holidays, while they also continue their planning for the "Choosen One's" grand annointing on Jan 20th. Having lived in the Washington, DC area for the past several years, I wouldn't expect anything different! Also, I truly believe that the time has come that all political-elected offices should have term limits, so that politicians don't stay in office for "life" and have to pay back all their contributors with favors of some sort or another. For many years, there's been too much pork in this town and I don't see that changing with the new administration. If anything, it will grown by leaps and bounds, since an awful lot of Obama supporters will have their hands out -- if they already haven't done so. Don't get me wrong, I wish the best for our new President, but I'm not going to hold my breath!

After 1/21/09, anything to do with mining shale or drilling oil in or offshore of the US is dead.

Great news, however all the liberals think Bush is the devil so they'll cancel it January 20th on principle.

Makes me sick.

Maybe someone will come up with a cheaper way of development of shale oil. It is in the best interest of the US.

Innovative technologies like this take years to develop and this is the right time to lay the groundwork. By the time the technology is mature oil will be back at $100 or 200 and that is when it will help. The mistake we always make is that when oil is low we forget about innovation and when it is high we say innovation will take too long. Time to get smart and plan ahead.

There is a very good chance oil will go under $50 today. Getting oil from rocks is expensive, so this may take a back seat.
